Log #28: Shore Leave, Sabotage, and Loss...

Personal Log:  This past week was interesting to say the least.  I would say the week was productive; Boris seemed to come out of her shell a bit, Tigger was ecstatic with the attention she was getting from Sparky, Meeko got to laze in the sun while eating all the saltines he wanted (He was especially popular with the ladies, young and old, it seems a tame raccoon is a rare sight to behold on a California beach, who’d have thought?).  I got a few lessons from Mike on using my sword, still not that great at it but I’ll learn in time.
I managed to escape for a while and go bouldering (rock climbing minus the harness) at Castle Rock in the Bay Area, where I ran into a few of my old climbing buddies and managed to have lunch with my former climbing instructor Sean, who I hadn’t seen in about a year and a half.  While the gang lounged on Stinson beach I went and showed Mike how to boulder on Mickeys Beach, where we hid for the rest of the day from all of Tigger’s many activities.
Visiting my brother Levon was definitely the highlight of my week.  To see how well he’d settled into his new life took away, stress I didn’t even know I carried.  He’d even met a girl.  Her name is Arabella, Ara for short.  Just one night with them I knew they were meant for each other.  I’ve always wondered if I made the right choice when I decided to stay enrolled in the Academy, leaving my brother to go through the majority of his physical therapy alone, but now I know I made the right choice.  They came to say goodbye as we were boarding the “Pink Flamingo”.  Ara didn’t comment on it’s color but my brother, true to form, asked the very question I had posed, “Who would paint a shuttle pink?  How did STARFLEET let that thing pass inspection!”  Hearing this made me smile, so I hugged him once more.  The smile Ara had on her face while she watched Levon made me pull her into a hug.  “Thank you Ara.”  Behind me I heard Mike calling my name, telling me we’re getting ready to leave. So I got in the shuttle, Sparky in the pilot seat, and Tigger in the Co-pilot seat.  Meeko was on sunbathing on the dashboard, Mike in the far backseat, an open seat next to him, and Boris and Kelsey in the middle rows.  I took my seat and waved at my Brother and Ara one last time before they were out of sight.  At some point I fell asleep only to wake up when someone picked me up.  I awoke the next morning to find myself in my bed on the USS Alaster.
Overall the week passed all too quickly, but it was full of wonderful adventures and priceless memories.

Personal Log: This past week was mainly filled with me unpacking and setting up my apartment, as I hadn’t had the chance to before being shipped off on the Alaster. With everything finally set up the way I wanted it, I had the opportunity to go and retrieve my baby from the clutches of my high-school menace of a brother.
It was the first week of school for him, so I showed up outside as it was letting out. I didn’t see my bike anywhere, but I did spot his curly mop heading out of the building, a gaggle of his friends surrounding him. He was still rather short, I was relieved to see. I still had a height advantage.
The kids around me were giving me odd looks, though most seemed curious. I was obviously too old to be a student, and far too young to be a parent. I ignored them, electing instead to raise one arm in greeting. My reunion with my brother was short but warm, as he told me it was not actually him that took my bike.(To be continued later)

Duty Log: All was well walking in the halls of the USS Alaster. All that changed once there was a sudden drop out of warp and emergency power. As i call out to Jenson, Talyard, and Hitchner for a sitrep it was made clear there was a communications failure. When i arrived in engineering I came across a scene of chaos. Fires everywhere with people trapped under rubble, Marines doing the best they can to help. I spotted an injured Jenson and Talyard and made my way to them. Snapping in Jenson’s face i could tell he was in bad shape. Me: “Can you hear me? What's happened?” Jenson: “Warp core misfired. Someone put in a failing code sequence.”. At this point dealing with the fires was top priority lest we all die. Coming to realize we had no power to vent the room i could only hope we didn’t push the ship until the fires were out. Almost if on queue the captain set the ship in motion… power was restored and the fires dealt with. Now moving to a computer to check the power relays across the ship i was met with daunting information.. All 15 stations across all 15 decks were damaged and we were operating below 50% power. Being short handed the other departments were sent to some of the relays to raise the shipwide condition. with the relays dealt with it appears its time to make sure the warp core is “happy” I ran a diagnostic to be met with only more problems..
To Be Continued…

Duty Log: At the time of the warp core failure and subsequent explosions, I was performing my evening workout in the ship gymnasium. After being thrown to the ground by a sudden shift in momentum, I got up and sprinted out of the gym. You could say that was a mistake, as I was again knocked off my feet by a secondary explosion that I could only assume was one of the fifteen power substations that regulated power aboard the Alaster. I again rose to my feet and moved towards engineering, only to be interrupted by more explosions as I navigated the ship’s corridors. I eventually made it to engineering, albeit with a few more bruises than I had left with. There I met up with CPO Freed, Kelsey, Sarah, Lizzie, and Lt. Commander Gray. Chief Engineer Freed ordered us to split into groups and go around repairing the ship’s power relays as quickly as possible. I went with Sarah to Relay 15, while Kelsey and Lizzie went to Relay 1. Upon arriving at Relay 15, the Master Chief and I were greeted with copious amounts of sparks and a slight electrical fire. The fire was extinguished once we had cut the power to the relay, which Ms. Jungling subsequently began repairing. Once I realized she had things under control, I left to examine the other relay stations.

  • CPO Kelsey Timmons - Backstory
My family is very old, very large and very established within the ranks of Starfleet. This is, of course, assuming ‘established’ is used in the sense that my family can be found everywhere. Pilots, technicians, weaponry, medical, exploration, soldiers - you name it and I can name at least one cousin who has something to do with it. And I have a lot of cousins. (Most of them with either Richmond or Rose somewhere in their name)
Not too many of us hold officers ranks, and I’m one of about three current department heads. You see, my family prefers to do the leg work. They want to get their hands dirty - build the devices, aim the phasers and the like. After all, what is a Captain without his crew?
Now, we can debate the semantics of the issue all day - probably all year if we are being realistic - or we can do what we came here to do. That is, me telling you how it is that I came to be the Chief of Communications aboard the USS Alaster.
As stated before, Starfleet runs in my blood. In fact, everyone who bears my name is brought up with the expectation that we will one day enter the Academy. We can pursue whatever it is we desire once accepted, but becoming a member isn’t an option. Not unless you want to end up being disowned, of course. And believe you me - that road is a lot harder than it looks.
I suppose I was rather lucky growing up. My father is the middle son of a middle son who worked as a lab engineer in New Texas. That’s where he met my mother - the youngest daughter of a hotshot Air Force Pilot. It wasn’t long after their marriage that he was transferred to the North East. When I came along, we were well away from the hub of Starfleet and, coincidentally, the familial influence.
The only thing that can be said to differentiate my youth is that I grew up as an only child. Other than that, I played with the same toys, had the same basic educations, mandatory school friends and aspiration of College as anyone else in our town. I was halfway through my degree in Anthropology before my grand-uncle remembered that his brother had another son - who had a family of his own. So it was that I transfered from my small time University to the Starfleet Academy is San Francisco.
Once there I did everything in my power to escape. But like I said earlier, if you are a Timmons, you belong in Starfleet. The only way for me to have the life I wanted was to not be a Timmons - was to not graduate the Academy. And so I failed, and failed again. I caused trouble in the classrooms, in the hallways, in the dorms. I did everything and anything I could think of to be dismissed from the ranks.
Yet, in the end, I was wholly unsuccessful in my endeavor. Not because my grades had slipped far enough. Not because I hadn’t enough misconducts on my records - or anything of that nature. I didn’t manage to flunk out of the Academy because I made friends. Or, more likely, fate decided my life wasn’t enough of a Greek Tragedy and so imposed upon me the company of Sarah Jungling, Sammy Stauffer and Lizzie Latham. (If these names are familiar to you then you have undoubtedly realized that I have yet to shake them.)
I met Sam the first week in. I had been skipping my intro classes in favor of playing basketball on the street courts (as it is difficult to find a horse ranch in the city). We developed a rivalry that turned into a  friendship. When I started missing our pick up games due to detention, she became suspicious and eventually figured out that I was enrolled in the Academy. It’s not exactly like I was attempting to hide it anyway. Some how, the woman convinced the guidance councilors that my behavior would improve if I had an athletic outlet. That is how we ended up playing for one of the Academy teams. And, as she predicted, it became the one thing I wouldn’t skive off. So ended my trouble making days.
Sarah was the second person I met. And by met, I mean that she literally tracked me down across campus and confronted me. Apparently we had been made partners in one of the many classes I hadn’t been to. Our project wasn’t something she could have managed alone, or I’m sure that would have been her first choice. Instead she spent the next month ambushing me and dragging me to the Library. Once she and Sammy met I was just screwed. There was no way either of them would let me flunk out - for different reasons obviously.
A year later, Sarah had found herself a sidekick in the form of an early acceptance student - Lizzie. Generally speaking, Sarah only had to check in with the girl every now and again to make sure she was adjusting well. If you think that’s how it went down you obviously haven’t been paying attention. The girl came with us everywhere - breakfast, lunch, diner and the dorms. She and Sarah would sit and do homework on the bleachers while Sammy and I had practice. They would come barging into my room to make sure I didn’t skip out on class. It was infuriating. Sadly enough for me, Lizzie was the type of girl I just couldn’t stay angry at.
Between the three of them, I managed to stay in the Academy. Somehow. I’m still pinning the blame on the fates for that particular event. However, as rankled as I was about having my life’s ambitions altered, it did absolutely nothing to prepare me for the oncoming storm that is Andrew Carlson.
It began as a rather boring day in my opinion. Sarah had coerced me into showing up for a final with the promise of hot coffee and a free meal. As I trudged through the door, I noticed two gentlemen sitting in the back row, speaking in low tones and looking about the room with varying degrees of curiosity. They were quickly forgotten in favor of the 3 part exam.
I had planned to blowing the entire thing as one last ditch attempt to escape my fate. However, my pride combined with my earlier training as an anthropologist wouldn’t let me sit quietly during the oral portion. The concept was rather simple - I was to hold a conversation in at least five Alien languages following certain, seemingly random, parameters. Issues arose my very first turn, in which I was to negotiate peace with a Ferengi War Delegation. It only got worse from there, culminating when my very irate professor announced that my final task was to barter a weapons deal with a Klingon Bird of Prey.
Now I will be the first to admit that I completely and utterly lost my temper at the horrid little man - who probably, by the way, couldn’t tell the difference between the Iliad and the Egyptian Book of the Dead if it bit him on the nose. In my fury, I apparently gave a rather impressive speech about the differences in cultural context and how they would come to play in any given translation. According to Sarah, it was the most I had spoken in a classroom - ever. By the time I was done, a rather dynamic diagram had been scrawled across the classroom walls - in several languages and dialects - and the professors toupee had ended up backwards. My exit would have been fantastically dramatic if one of the strangers hadn’t grabbed my shirt collar and jerked me to the side.
Later, I discovered that his name was Andrew Carlson and he was the newly appointed Commander of a Miranda class starship called the Alaster. He was sitting in on various graduate level classes to hand pick his Department Heads. And, for some god unknown reason, he wanted me to be his Chief of Comms. I don’t think I’ve ever come across a more stubborn individual in my life - and I do make a point to look in a mirror every so often.
We spent the rest of the period arguing - yes, arguing. Finally, it seemed as though I had won because he and his companion left and I was free to go home. When I arrived at my apartment, there was an envelope with all the appropriate documentation for me to join the crew of the Alaster as a Department Head. The vast majority of it had already been filled out. All it was lacking was my own signature.
For the record - I should have burned the thing instead of simply throwing it away. But that didn’t stop Andrew from harassing me every time he saw me, regardless of whose company I was in. So much for winning that argument.
Two weeks later, Sam was picking me up from the annual Circus of Hell - aka family meetings (yes, meetings, not reunions.) If I wasn’t in such a foul mood, I would have noticed that she bypassed the city in favor of the hangar bays. When I managed to  look around, Sam had parked in front of a shuttle titled The Delphi.
“Do you like it?” A voice sounded from across the hanger. It was Andrew again, this time dressed in a Class B uniform and surrounded by several other individuals in similar states of dress. “I heard you had a thing for Greek Mythology - so I thought the name would be perfect for the Communications shuttle.”
I didn’t move from my place astride the motorbike. “You want to run that one by me again?” My voice was strained with poorly concealed annoyance.
Andrew walked closer. “This is our XO, John Gray.” He gestured to one of the gentlemen beside him. “And our Chief of Engineering, Anthony Freed.” The other figure stayed by the shuttle but gave a half hearted wave. “Guys,” Andrew continued. “This is Kelsey Timmons. She will be serving as our Chief of Communications.”
“No I won’t.” The words were a reflexive response. “I like my feet on the ground, thank you very much. And you cannot pay me enough to get in that shuttle … even if the name is kick-ass.” I muttered the last part mostly to myself.
The only response I got was a handful of documents - the same documents I had thrown away almost a month ago. But this time, they were legitimate and binding, complete with my signature.
My mouth worked for several seconds, but no sound came out. I was about to protest, claiming that someone had forged my signature when Sam kicked my leg. Turning to her, I saw two more figures in the distance. Sarah and Lizzie were loading my efects onto the shuttle. Suddenly, I knew exactly what had happened. They had set me up and were getting ready to see me off on a ship I didn’t want to be on, in a position I hadn’t earned.
A single look at Andrew was all it took to confirm my theory - he was well aware of what had transpired and wasn’t going to do a thing about it. I had officially lost the war, but that doesn’t mean that I couldn’t take some people down with me.
I shoved the pile of papers back at my new captain, not bothering to hide my sneer.  “I’m not getting on that hunk of scrap metal without those two,” I pointed to Sarah and Lizzie, “In my department.” He was nodding as I jumped off the bike and stalked toward the shuttle.
“Oh,” I stopped halfway up the steps and turned back. “The girl on the bike is Samantha Stauffer. You won’t find a better pilot - period.”
The Captain held my gaze for a just a second before he turned to look at my friends. Then he smirked. “I can work with that.”

As I walk through the ship alone I came across “The Dent”. As I stared down at this abyss people have come to call a dent I call for Jenson. No Answer as I recall he must have some resemblance of a “life” on Earth. I call Talyard expecting no different... As I made my way back to main engineering to acquire the necessary tools I grumbled as I am not accustom to cosmetic fixes. With the tranquility staff around me, wary of my grumbling, I made my way back to “The Dent”, and as I popped the metal back into place I had a strange feeling come over me as if there is much more to come. Almost as if a strange voice told me.. “[Quest Accepted: Nuts, bolts, and What?]“.

Personal Log: During Kelsey’s appointment yesterday, we got notification that Lt. Marcus was awake. Not even pausing to say goodbye, I rushed down there. I must admit, I let my emotions get the best of me. He took my reaction with a grain of salt, seemingly unperturbed. We chatted for a while, and he told me to get Sparky to work on the Demon Hunter. I left to do so, but could not find him. Worn out, I retired early.
This morning, when I awoke, I was plagued by shadows from the night before. I did not know what of, for a veil was cast before my eyes. I only felt a distance, a disconnect between myself and the hustle and bustle about me. I could vaguely remember a dream, a nightmare. The man that attacked the Demon Hunter was present, I was sure of it. I could see his face, partly hidden in the shadow of his hood. I could hear his voice echoing in my head. “You win, this time.”
Sarah interrupted my musings, and convinced me to go with her to the holodeck. We met up with Sparky and Michael Knight there. Meeko was found in the vents proudly wearing Sparky’s badge, a sight which caused me to burst into much-welcomed laughter.
Upon regaining my composure, I asked why Sparky had tagged along. This was a mistake, for as soon as he mentioned the shape of the Demon Hunter, I remembered. I remembered everything. The entirety of my nocturnal torture flashed before my eyes, and I was helpless to stop its tide.
There was a cliff. It stood high, vivid, in stark contrast to the pale whitewashed sky behind. And a lake, wherein the Alaster sat. We were on the cliff. The marines, I mean, and Lt. Gray and Captain Carlson. I was more just there, an observer only. There, too, was the hooded man. The bodies of the marines were strewn about, their eyes blank, their bodies soaked in blood, lips turning blue in the pallor of death. Marcus was among them, the blood still oozing slowly from the slit in his throat. He, and the others, had died not merely fighting for their lives but fighting to protect someone, something. All of them lay there, their lifeblood staining the ground and turning it into a red clay. Yet Andrew and John stood strong, exhausted and battered but unyielding. As I watched, frozen, John charged, swinging his sword with deadly speed. WIth an even faster response, the man swung his own weapon. It was a large thing reminiscent of a warhammer. Even from my distance I could see the blood that caked it. John was caught across the face. I could hear the crunch as his jaw and cheekbones shattered. Like a ragdoll, he dropped to the ground, limp and lifeless. As I watched, the weapon changed from a warhammer to a sword at the click of a button. I tried to cry out, but I was voiceless. I was frozen.  The man toyed with the captain, raining blow upon blow with Andrew parrying, no time given for his own strike. Exhausted, Andrew finally slipped up in the game of cat-and-mouse. His back was to the edge of the cliff. The figure stabbed forward, and the captain could not sidestep in time. He took the blade full on. I saw the glinting metal hesitate a bit as it skittered across a rib before plunging deep into his chest.  I saw as the light faded slowly from his eyes. The hooded Delastrian picked up one foot, pushing my Captain off the sword with disdain. His body tumbled over the edge of the cliff.I was mute and paralyzed, helpless to do anything. The man looked up, his gaze locking mine. I could feel my blood turn to ice as his features twisted upwards into a broad smile.
Struck suddenly with this barrage of images, I felt myself freeze. I leaned against the wall for support. The blood drained out of my face and I was suddenly weak, shaking. Sarah tried to call for medical help, but I refused it. I struggled to gain control of myself. The Captain ordered me to either go to the medbay for treatment or to go see Dr. Blake, the psychiatrist. After arguing against treatment, I finally caved and chose the latter. Sparky helped me get there, whereupon I collapsed onto the beanbag chair and curled up into a ball, hoping desperately that it would help shield me from the images of the people I loved, corpses that glared accusingly at me behind my closed lids.
Story Log: When I was growing up, my parents used to take my brothers and I camping. I’m not talking cabin-camping or glamping, I mean real survivalist training. I learned everything from my mother – how to forage for food, how to purify water, how to identify poisonous animals, how to make rafts and cross water, how to tie knots, even how to set traps and snares (much to my dismay and the horror of little Josiah). One year, when I was ten, we had a bit of a fright. Five-year-old Alex went missing from the campsite. We were three days deep into the Rockies and had no idea when he had left during the night. It was the first time I had to use my tracking skills. Mother thought it would be a good training exercise, and some mother-daughter time as well. She took me, leaving the boys at the campsite with Father.
With four kids, you don’t exactly get a lot of alone time with anyone. This was one of the only times I saw my mother in her element. Sure, she was highly effective aboard a Starship, but this was her one true love. With all the technology and diplomacy erased.
Excitedly, she pointed out the rubbed and broken ferns that marked something had gone through. I followed the trail, with her behind me. In a spot of mud, I noticed my brother’s footprint. I pointed it out to Mother. She encouraged me, her face aglow. She brushed the track with her fingertips, remarking it was less than an hour old. I rushed ahead, crying out Alex’s name. Mother followed, smile gracing her thin lips.
Eventually I heard the wailing of my brother. I burst into a clearing where he sat, knees scraped up from a tree root he tripped over.
“Tammy!” he cried as I ran over to him, checking his knees for injury and asking if he was okay while lightly admonishing him for wandering off.
“Sawwy Tammy, I won’t do it again,” he sniffled.
I turned to look at Mother. She was leaning against a tree, a proud smile firmly etched on her face.
           “Well done,” she said.

Subject: Lost our Marbles
Location: USS Alaster

Duty Log: The day had started out with Petty Officer Hitchner reporting to security that he had found a heavy marble in Engineering. Following this a security team was dispatched to relieve the Petty Officer of the object and bring it to Sciences. In Sciences I arrived and started a scan for more of the marbles. Myself and Benny Blueshirt found that there were fourteen more of them scattered across the ship in no particular pattern. At this point I alerted Lt. Bennet to the issue by putting the numerous marbles into “custody”. The marbles themselves weigh approximately fifteen pounds on average and are made of a dilithium titanium alloy that exhibits magnetic qualities. After some time I questioned the Lt. as to the whereabouts of the final marble. The marble was lodged between the lights on the ceiling outside of Command Deck. I made my way from Sciences to the scene of the problem to see if anything could be done about it. I arrived to find Lt. Bennet and two other Security Officers attempting to pry it from the ceiling. At that time Petty Officer Hitchner arrived, presumably to help in our endeavor to retrieve the marble. Seeing as he was an Engineer and he had found the first marble I ordered the Security Officer off the ladder and ordered Petty Officer Hitchner to retrieve the marble from the ceiling. After a bit of tugging it became obvious it wouldn’t be moved under normal circumstances. And since it would be a security hazards to leave it there I notified the Captain, who was in Engineering to seal off our corridor and shut off the gravity. As soon as this occurred Petty Officer Hitchner was able to pull the now weightless marble from the ceiling. Making sure everyone was properly oriented I alerted Commander Carlson that he could return us to normal gravity.
Having retrieved the final marble I made my way back to sciences with Petty Officer Hitchner in tow. Once there I released him to go back to his station. The Science Officer present then informed me of the laser reflective qualities of the marbles. If a laser were concentrated on a marble it would begin to reflect it to adjacent marbles. No other information is currently know as to the purpose of these. But their presence on the ship leaves more questions than answers.

Personal log: At breakfast this morning, I heard talk that Lt. Marcus had awoken in Med Bay and that Danny had been released. I immediately went to Med Bay and spoke with the shift nurse. She reported that Lt. Marcus had recovered better than could be expected. He was able to sit up and do some movement without pain. I was unable to speak directly with Lt. Marcus because he had a visitor when I arrived: Second Lt. Brandon Johnson, his second in command.

After reporting for duty later than I would like to admit, PO Jenson brought me up to speed on recent events. He informed me of Danny’s condition and Department Head Freed’s decision to stay with him in medical. After trading a few sarcastic remarks, I left Jenson in Engineering while I performed my usual rounds. I must admit, I felt a little apprehension when I arrived at the rear shield generator, seeing as how it almost blew me up the last time I was there. Fortunately, no such fiasco occurred this time, and it seemed as though the repairs that were made had done their job.
The same level of normalcy was not the case in the forward shield room. While nothing exploded, there was a strange, metallic object on the floor. The size and shape of a marble, the object had the weight of a bowling ball. I contacted security to inform them of my discovery, after which Lt. CMDR Gray ordered me to stay put while a team of his people came to retrieve the item in question. I would later discover that this “marble” was but one of many.
Later in the day, I once again encountered the XO and his people in one of the ship’s corridors. They were all gathered around a crewman on ladder next to a light fixture. Before I could ask what was going on, the Lt. Commander ordered me to take the place of the man on the ladder. When I got to the top of said ladder, I discovered another “marble.” After a few moments of unsuccessfully trying to pry the object from its hiding spot between the wall and the light fixture, Lt. CMDR Gray had engineering cut artificial gravity to the part of the ship we were in. Without any gravity, the sphere floated out of its perch, where I was able to retrieve it. Once gravity was restored, I accompanied the XO to science, “marble” in tow. When I arrived, I was greeted with the sight of 14 different objects identical to the ones that had been found earlier. You might say I was dumbstruck, even incredulous. I had never even heard of such a dense metal before. Sadly, my curiosity would have to wait. I was dismissed by my superior immediately after delivering the “marble.”

Personal Log:  Today I was on my way to the holodeck to spar with Michael Knight when I ran into MID Samantha Stauffer.  She was very out of it when I approached her which was worrying by itself, but after inviting her to join me on the holodeck she seemed to perk up a bit.  Once we arrived Michael came with Sparky in tow.  Sammy had been looking for Sparky earlier.  Just as Michael and I were about to begin sparring Sammy froze and began looking incredibly pale.  I rushed over to her, getting her to sit down, while calling CPO Kelsey Timmons and CDT CRMN Alicia Latham, a friend and medic respectively.  Sammy insisted she was fine, claiming it was just a nightmare she’d had the night before.  I was insisting she at least be looked at when the Captain arrived in the hallway.  He asked if she was alright, saying she looked less than fine.  Sammy insisted that she didn’t need medical attention for a simple nightmare, the reaction the captain had to hearing it was a nightmare was very ominous.  He insisted that “dreams are not meaningless.”  Which made me wonder what kind of dream this could be.  After reiterating his point a second time, the Captain left, and Sammy headed to the psychiatrist.
Now that we’re headed to Earth I have to wonder what is in store for our crew.  Marbles, Marines, and Nightmares… Oh my.
Story Log:  This whole incident reminded me of an event that seems almost a lifetime ago.
Growing up with my only immediate family being an older brother that I barely ever saw except on rare occasions when he had time off was tough.  He was enrolled in the Academy before I was even 3 years old, by the time I was .  Still even though he was hardly ever around he was always there for me.  He always took time to send me letters of all his adventures, he even managed to show up at my 10th birthday party, to this day I have no idea how he did it, the last I had heard was he was scheduled to leave from Tranquility Base on a mission.  The pride I saw every time my brother would tell me about the work he was doing is what made me join Starfleet to begin with, but it’s not what made me stay.
If I recall it right it must have been within the first two week of starting at the Academy that I got the news, my brother Levon’s ship had come under attack and he’d been badly injured.  I was devastated, no one would tell me when I would get to see him again, IF I would get to see him again.  Needless to say the next few weeks were a complete blur.  I was questioning everything I thought I knew I wanted.  It wasn’t until three or four weeks after the initial news that I found out my brother was alive, but he wouldn’t be going on anymore adventures.  He’d spent two weeks in a coma, awakening with a severe speech and movement issues.  His spinal cord was lightly damaged around his C7 and T1 vertebrae, so he had limited muscular control of his hands.  It looked like he would be spending the next year at the least in rehabilitation.
It was about two months since my brother’s accident and I was almost done filling out the needed paperwork to be dismissed from the Academy when I realized I was missing a few forms.  I had to print them out so I was on my way to the library with the papers in hand.  As I turned the corner right by the library I was knocked flat on my ass, my forms scattered everywhere.  It came as no surprise to me to find that the person who had run into me was none other than Kelsey Timmons, the girl had been trying to get kicked out of the academy since day one. (I’ve always thought she had been so unsuccessful because of her automatic reaction to display her good manners)  I never did ask what exactly she’d been running from, but it must not have been too important because she immediately started gathering my stuff up off the floor.  She must have read the top of the form, because (despite her constantly insisting she didn’t want to be here) she seemed surprised that anyone would fill out the proper paperwork to leave.  I don’t remember what she said but whatever it was it struck a chord and I realized that my best bet, to both honor my brother, and care for him during his recovery, was to graduate the Academy.
The first time I saw my brother after the accident was the beginning of my second year at the Academy.  By that time Kelsey and I had become reluctant friends, her always trying to get kicked out, while I saw to it that she didn’t get kicked out.

Personal Log: This week we are on Shore Leave, meaning we are once again on Earth, feet firmly grounded. I returned to my apartment for the first time since being assigned to the USS Alaster. Everything was still in boxes, though it had gathered much dust. I found my motorcycle's keys underneath a long-dead potted plant. Heading down to take her to stretch her legs, I found instead a bicycle and a note. "Sis, borrowed the motorcycle. Hope you don't mind."
I bet my behind it was Alex. The ass-hat, how dare he take her for a joyride? Rather pissed off, I stomped up to my apartment. I would deal with him later. For now, I had to unpack my apartment which was going to likely take until Wednesday....

Personal Log: Kelsey, Boris, Tigger, Michael Knight, Sparky, Meeko and I are aboard a bright pink shuttle headed to California for our shore leave.  The week holds lots of possibilities both good and terrifying (Tigger’s still trying to set everyone up on dates).  I can only imagine what this week will bring, but it should be entertaining.  On another note, whoever had the bright idea to let Tigger take point in piloting the shuttle will be swiftly kicked in the shins.  I love that girl to death, but she’s way too excited about this week, and Kelsey and I seem to have horrible luck with shuttles as it is.  That being said, Tigger has a giant heart and only wants the best for us, even it isn’t necessarily what we want.

Log #25: Patching Wounds

Personal Log: In the wake of the battle, I checked myself into the medbay to be treated. luckily, the seatbelts and cushioning of the pilot’s seat kept me from any excessive internal damage, though I’m black and blue and my leg burns like hell.
The medbay staff informed me that both Danny and Justin were undergoing surgery for internal injuries, and that Terra was in intensive care due to severe cranial hemorrhaging. Kelsey and Sarah came to visit me, along with a very concerned Meeko. It was kind of them, to check in on me. They must have had a lot to do, after all, with the chaos that just passed. Regardless, I was grateful for their company. Danny was wheeled out soon after my arrival, anesthetized but in recovery. Blue alert went on for Justin though, but went off soon after.
The news of the three men’s injuries hit me hard. I felt as though the hair had been sucked from my lungs, leaving me dizzy. My limbs felt as though they were iron, dragging down and collapsing me inwards. Could I not breathe, or did I simply not want to? Danny and Justin were in my charge. Though I feel guilt at Danny’s injuries, I am grateful that he is on the road to recovery. However, my feelings for the Lieutenant are slightly more mixed.
First, I feel angry - nay, beyond angry - though I cannot tell if it is at him or myself. He had to be a hero and shove me out of the way, and if it costs him his life, he seemed not to care. How dare he nearly kill himself? Doesn’t he know his men need him?  Did he even think about them? And what about me? It was my duty to keep them safe.
Second, I feel worried sick. If he dies, I am not sure if I will be able to keep myself together. We have known each other only a short while but, besides my department, he is the one I’ve worked with the most to keep the Alaster as out of trouble as our unlucky ship can be. I feel closer to him, to them both, after our time under the stars and away from the ship. I don’t want to lose a friend.
Third, I am confused about my actions. I am a sworn pacifist, I do not enjoy violence nor will I ever resort to it unless absolutely necessary. Yet in that moment, seeing Justin take the blow and seeing Danny and Terra’s injuries, talking to the Delastrian was the last thing on my mind. I tried to disarm him, then, upon his attacking Danny, I tried to kill him. No hesitation. No moral battle. I tried to kill him. I wanted to kill him. And this kind of a want was something I had never felt before. I do not know if it had always been there, but as I sit here and write I can still feel it. A burning hot cherry pit deep within myself, longing to break free of the cage of rationale and calm that I have so intricately and delicately wound around it. I know not what summoned it, but I find myself wanting to bid it rise, if I ever encounter that Delastrian again. I want to be the one to destroy him, and that desire alone is what is frightening me.
Fear also comes from my thoughts for the future. We might have narrowly escaped death this time, but it seems to me each day brings more and more challenges that we are struggling to overcome. I can only pray that the day comes when we will see this blasted war end, when we will finally have peace.
Thinking of the Delastrians, a song rises unbidden to my mind. My father used to sing it to me, his voice a husky tenor. It’s from an old musical, his father used to sing it to him at night, and his father before that. The lyrics go something like this: “Hades is king of the scythe and the sword. He covers the world in the color of rust. He scrapes the sky, and scars the earth, and he comes down heavy and hard on us. But even the hardest of hearts unhardened suddenly when he saw her there. Persephone in her mother’s garden…” (there’s a part here that I can’t seem to remember.) “Suddenly Hades was only a man, with the taste of nectar upon his lips…”
As demonic as these being seem to us, I must remember that they are still capable of all that we are. They surely must love, must grieve, must fear, right? Perhaps they can yet be reasoned with, so we might yet end this war in peace, without the use of the Arbiter’s weaponry. A war that ends by the threat of death is hardly peace, now, is it?

Two days after the battle and most patients are improving. MID Sammy Stauffer has been treated for her injuries and released. She will have to return to MedBay again so we can gauge the recovery of her concussion. CPO Kelsey Timmons has been released after been treated with minor injuries. Terra has been diagnosed with brain damage and the bleeding in his brain. He will not recover and will most likely be brain dead in the near future. The CMDR has been notified of his condition. Terra has no family that can be notified. Danny has recovered and was alert and responsive when I spoke with him. He will most likely be released in the near future. Lt. Marcus is currently in a medically induced coma. His condition isn’t stable and the coma is helping with the pain. He has been prescribed anti-inflammatory medicine as well. Lt. Marcus’ condition is being monitored and my prediction is that he will make a good recovery once his pain is at a manageable level.

Personal Log: Following my dismissal from the medbay, I made my way up to the bridge. On the way, I noticed an unusual amount of people in street clothes, and most were eating breakfast sandwiches. I made a mental note to thank the Captain for leaving me a clean uniform. However, I was surprised to find him not present when I reported for duty. In his place sat Captain James Harvey. He was an old friend of Commander Carlson’s. He informed me that Carlson was at a meeting on the USS Dover. I had Ehrhart bring me a tanto, for swords have become standard-issue on the ship after learning the only way to kill a Delastrian is decapitation.
I left Ehrhart at the helm while I went on a coffee run. However, this did not end as well as I’d planned. I walked into the mess hall and immediately found my feet leaving the ground as I was greeted with cheers and thunderous applause. Thank you, Sparky. I absolutely hate getting picked up. It took everything I could not to scream, though I did not manage to suppress a squeak.

Luckily CPO Timmons walked in at that moment and made them put me down. I grabbed us coffee, promising to return and tell the marines all about planetfall. When I got out to the hall, Kelsey showed me a letter from the ship psychiatrist. She requested I go with her, and I agreed.
