Subject: Cadet Cruise

Flight Control briefed us on a search and rescue mission that was to be performed in the debris field of the Rosenberg and USS Frontier. After exiting warp we discovered 11 signs of life. All contained between three escape pods. Retrieval of the first two sets of survivors was routine. Retrieval of the last required combat against pirates and a newly discovered microbe. Each of which will be described in detail by the corresponding departments.

Subject: Cadet Cruise

Weapon’s Officer Duty Log: Upon entering the area surrounding the debris field weapons stations was ordered to bring shield online. Moments later an enemy Cardassian Cruiser was spotted to the 2 o’clock of the ship. Communications had noted that the enemy had not yet deployed their shields. Upon further scans this was recognized as true. Loading four homing torpedoes Weapons stations made their locks on the enemy cruiser through the debris field. Engineering had a power failure to Phaser Banks only just before the enemy came into range of the torpedoes. Upon asking for permission to fire on the enemy cruiser torpedoes were launched with devastating effect. The enemy cruiser was hit by all four torpedoes and suffered critical damage and was officially sunk. The escape pods were locked on target with the help of my weapons officers and pulled in by sciences. Nine survivors were brought in this way. This concludes the role of Weapons and Security during the voyage.

Medical/Science Log:
The USS Alaster came across the remnants of a battleship. We were trying to get the ship through the scattered fragments of the ship to 3 different espape pods with a total of 11 people on them. One escape pod has 2 people, another had 4 people, and the third had 5 people on board. We were able to retrieve all three escape pods, but not without difficulty. We learned that the escape pod with 2 people on board had grabbed a microbe in their lab when the evacuated their ship, and they had asked us to study it. We tried to contain the unknown microbe in the shuttle, but the seal wasn’t tight and began to spread within the shuttle. In the hangerbay, PO2 Goldstein, CRMN Hitchner, PO2 Detterline and I tried to seal the hangerbay and get the people on board the shuttle oxygen tanks so we could remove the oxygen from the shuttle. The microbes were using the oxygen within the shuttle the expand. The hangerbay was locked down, to save the rest of the ship from being contaminated from microbes. After several failed attempts to contain the microbes, PO2 Goldstein, CRMN Hitchner, PO2 Detterline, and myself piled into a shuttle in the hangerbay. We proceeded to clear the shuttle of all microbes and sealing the shuttle, after dealing with a jammed door. The CMDR Carlson, ordered us to gravity lock all things to the floor and the hangerbay door was opened, and all the microbes were sucked out into space.

Head Physician Duty Log: I am still trying to comprehend the events of this mission. It was quite literally the stuff of nightmares. *sigh* After the altercation that took place over a space meadow of trash, my team and I were alerted to an escape pod containing two refugees and a bloodthirsty space tuberculosis. It started out as it always does, I suppose. Initial frenzy over discovering the presence of a potentially fatal microbe, suiting up, and preparing to retrieve samples so derp-- I mean, sciences can tell us what we’re dealing with. Things spun out of control pretty fast. I haven’t even finished my lukewarm coffee, which was sitting on my desk from this morning after I was beautifully interrupted by annoying peoples and brain tumors. The first attempt to control the outbreak was to ventilate antivirals in a gaseous form. Needless to say, we wasted a lot of monies on those supposed antivirals. It turns out this ‘virus’ seemed to feed on the substance we administered. They rapidly grew in size, mutating so fast our heads were spinning. Eventually they became visible and we basically had a ball pit of viruses. In addition to beating them...with our fists, I guess, their size allowed for easy disposal into deep space. Thus, the threat was seemingly ended.

Subject: Cadet Cruise

Communications Log: During this cruise communication was still recovering from being hacked, and thus experienced a number of systems failures, particularly when we, CRMN Lizzie Latham and I, were trying to receive transmissions. The first incoming transmission we received was from a group of scavengers, the message was incoherent at best, less than 25% of the original message transmitted. After trying a few times we were able to distinguish what was being said, “Just because we have no shields doesn’t mean you’ve won. You couldn’t hit the broadside of a planet with that aim.” Or some variation of that.
The next transmission we received, was still spotty but we were able to clean it up very little time. It was from one of the escape pods. They apparently decided that while running for their lives, they had to save their experiment. Thus they were contacting us to request a Science Officer be present to examine this Microbe they found. One that experiences exponential growth when exposed to Oxygen. Which posed a large problem for the rescue mission. How do we save the survivors in the escape pod without compromising the rest of our ship to these Microbes? After a miscalculation, we contacted the escape pod again asking them how upset they would be if we were to destroy the microbe, the response was, “NOT AT ALL!” Apparently they’d grown so much in the escape pod, the two survivors were afraid they’d be suffocated to death before anyone could rescue them. Our mission was successful we were able to rescue all 11 survivors, in three separate escape pods, from the wreckage of the SS Rosenberg, and USS Frontier. Looking back I believe communications can do a better job with clearing up transmissions if they come in spotty, like they did during this mission.

Helms Duty Log: For this mission, we returned to the wreckage of the USS Rosenberg to look for survivors. When three different escape pods were discovered, I piloted us close enough to the debris field to beam up the survivors, but not close enough to risk damage to the ship. Skirting around the debris field, we ran into some pirates, who attacked. I attempted evasive maneuvering, but the proximity of the debris field left my capabilities somewhat hampered. We were hit, though we eliminated the threat quickly. Approaching the third, possibly contaminated escape pod, I stopped the ship and Helmsman Kelly disembarked in a shuttle to tow the escape pod on board. Once the threat was dealt with, I turned the ship and took us back to Starbase 109.

Engineering log: During our mission to find survivors of the USS Rosenburg, engineering experienced several technical difficulties with the Alaster’s impulse engines. Additionally, the power to ship’s phasers was temporarily lost during an encounter with an enemy vessel. All problems were swiftly resolved. At one point during the mission, the captain ordered engineering and medical to aid in the retrieval of a potentially contaminated escape pod carrying three survivors of the Rosenburg. The escape pod also had aboard a microorganism of a rather temperamental disposition. Following Helmsman Kelly depositing the escape pod in the hangar bay, PO Jensen and I were tasked with setting up a containment field around the pod while medical would enter to retrieve the specimen and provide medical attention to the people aboard. Unexpectedly, the microorganism reacted rather strongly to the carbon dioxide science pumped into the lifeboat. The little bastards grew to about the size of a human fist and managed to escape the containment field before Jensen and I had finished assembling it. After numerous attempts by science to subdue the no-longer-so-microorganisms, the captain decide that our only choice was to open the hangar bay doors and let the creatures(?) be sucked out into space. My fellow crewmates and I ran to the nearest shuttle for shelter, dodging large amorphous blobs along the way. When I went close the shuttle’s rear hatch, the door mechanism jammed. With the aid of PO2 Goldstein, the door was unjammed and closed, ensuring we wouldn’t be sucked into the void with our unwanted guests. After a few tense moments, the macrobes were gone, and we returned to the work of quarantining and treating the men/women aboard the escape shuttle from the Rosenburg.
Personal log: I find it disconcerting that a few ragtag pirate ships could take down one of the most powerful and advanced vessels in the Federation fleet. I doubt those bastards could defeat a Constitution class starship in a fair fight, which makes me wonder; what could have possibly happened to the Rosenburg? Did they have a sudden total system failure at the exact moment the pirates attacked?
