Subject: Icarus Retrieval Mission
Location: Cara System

Captain’s Duty Log: The mission to retrieve the Icarus probe had a few last minute additions. Due to the recent events involving the Enochians, Starfleet Command thought it be wise to study the pod of space whales in the Carara System as well, to draw comparisons between the space whales and the Enochian biology, specifically looking for organs and biological functions related to the ability to communicate in space. Warping to the Carara System went well and helms officers Kelly and Stauffer were able to guide us to, using communication’s gamma frequency program, the Icarus Probe with ease. Science Officer Detterline then transmitted the data to Captain James Harvey, back on Tranquility Base. In the process the ship collected 2 dilithium crystals. Sciences then zeroed in on the pod of space whales gathered around a starfleet probe that was leaking fluid. In order to get close enough scans, Pilot Samantha Stauffer had to enter the mouth of the creature. Sciences will detail the exact results of the scans in his log. Angering the bull of the pod, we made a quick escape back to Earth.

Chief Weapons Officer Duty Log: The mission started with a simple checking off of weapons and shields. All systems showed green and all sensitive items were accounted for. Following entry to the Cara System. Shields were raised as this was an unfamiliar location to the USS Alaster and potential for pirates was a noted concern. Luckily none were to show up along our mission route. Weapons Stations reported no sightings while the Icarus probe was picked up and friendly vessels in the sector reported no conflicting reports. A pod of Space Whale was spotted off the Bow of the ship. Initial contact showed no problems but a large Bull Whale charged the ship. Weapons were trained on the whale but it turned out to be unnecessary as the ship was able to escape without any damage being sustained. It should be noted that although the shields can take direct energy fire from enemy vessels collision with a large biomass such as a Space Whale would cause critical damage and for the safety of the ship proximity incursions should only be made with shuttle craft. A single tracker was fired from the port torpedoes tube to track the location of the Space Whale pod. The tracker made impact on the largest of the whales and showed no problems.

Piloting the ship to the cara system went well, we encountered friendly citizen vessels within the system. Scans indicated that Dilithium crystal were in the area, so we went and collected what we could. Scans indicated that the Icarus probe was behind an asteroid field. Pilting the ship around the field was the safest course of action. After retrieving the probe and collecting the data we set our course to investigate space whale. While examining the whales we discovered that they had calcium plating on their backs. Performing “Operation Jonah” was CPO Samantha Stauffer and Benny Blue Shirt. This mission was to retrieving a better scan of the whales without hurting them in anyway. After collecting the data on the space whales we set a course for home.

Helms Duty Log: After performing routine checks on navigation and steering systems, we set our course for the Icarus Probe. Along the way, we paused to use a tractor beam to retrieve a dilithium crystal. Navigations experienced no errors on the way to the Icarus Probe, and I piloted a shuttle from the USS Alaster to Icarus to retrieve information with the Chief Science officer. Following the re-docking of the shuttle, I returned to my post at the Bridge. Sciences provided the location of a pod of Space Whales, and we proceeded to that location, shooting between a planetoid and the sun of the Cara System. Arriving at the pod of Space Whales, we discovered a bone plating on their backs. This forced us to approach the pod from underneath. When we started a calf, a bull charged us and we were forced to flee. Unfortunately, I made a few navigational miscalculations in the chaos, but those were quickly noticed and I corrected them. A second pass by the pod, which had surrounded a damaged probe, proved unhelpful from distanced scanning, and enabled us to form Operation Jonah. Operation Jonah was executed by myself and “Benny Blueshirt,” one of the scientists on board, as our Chief Science Officer apparently had a mishap involving a pair of handcuffs and his desk. Benny and I boarded the science shuttle Atlantis and undocked, maneuvering ourselves closer to the pod. Our shuttle contained the dilithium crystal we had retrieved earlier on in the deployment. As this is a food source for space whales, we soon attracted the attention of a large adolescent. It opened its mouth to swallow us, and I deftly maneuvered us into its maw. As soon as Benny and I were clear of the teeth, I engaged the external inertial dampener. Benny performed invasive scans to determine the organ that produced theta waves capable of destabilizing our warp core. Our scans, though they were completed, appeared to distress the adolescent and he became aggressive. I disengaged the external inertial dampener and slipped out through its teeth as it opened and closed its mouth, narrowly missing them. We emerged with no damage to the shuttle or, more importantly, the whale. I redocked with no difficulty and the USS Alaster took off away from the pod, unwilling to tangle with unhappy behemoths. We returned to our home solar system with no trouble.
Personal Log: The mission was a success, and I was rather proud of my handling of the shuttle. The ship managed to not harm the whales (thank goodness) and PO2 Freed’s distasteful suggestion to gut the beautiful creatures was almost remedied by his wit and humor during the deployment. I count myself lucky to have gotten so close to such a magnificent and rare being. Not many people have.

Communications Log: Communications had a few system errors but overall nothing went wrong on this side of the mission. We had an issue with our equipment specifically with receiving the data from the first of two transmissions. However we were able to understand enough to know what was being said. The issue was resolved by the time we received the second transmission. Other than those instances Communications was on standby in case we were needed. All internal Communications systems including the new upgrades needed for the Icarus retrieval mission, which went off without a hitch.

Communications experienced minor problems at the beginning of the mission but those were quickly fixed thanks to engineering. Later on gamma rays messed with our communications and we received two messages from two different starfleet ships. The first asked for assistance in fixing a nearby station and the other requested our help in fixing a broken telescope on their ship. We ignores both as neither ship was in any real danger and we still had not accomplished our mission.

Engineering Duty log: During the Icarus retrieval engineering encountered minimal interference and operated at 100% power for a majority of the time. During the first attempt to warp from the system there was some interference coming from one of the larger whales (About the size of Andrews Palm on scale of the board.). once all objectives where met the warp core was primed and operated at 110% power as we left the system.
